Sorry for butting in here Dave, I hope you don’t mind ---- Mike, I’m assuming that you are working on a 3800 engine here. Code 41 is set if the engine is running and the ECM has not seen a Cam Sensor signal for the last 2-5 seconds. Jamie wrote a good description of the operation of this type of ICM in a post that can be found in the January/February archive under the title “GM C3I Ignition”. I recommend that you give it a read. --- Basically, the module powers the cam sensor. It supplies 10 volts at terminal “C” (ckt 644) and ground at terminal “B” (ckt 645). The cam sensor pulls the signal wire low, terminal “A” (ckt 633). I would check the signal wire with a labscope (Vantage will do) to see if it has a 5 volt reference signal and, that the cam sensor is switching the reference signal. If not, you probably have a problem with the sensor, connections or the magnet in the cam gear. If you DO have a cam signal that is been switched, then check the “cam signal out” signal from the module to ECM (ckt 630). If you have a good signal that is switching on this circuit then I would suspect the ECM or connections at the ECM, if you don’t have a switched signal then I would look at the ignition module. I don’t remember the voltage of this signal but I think it is around 10-12 volts (Dave - Help!) ----- Another test to confirm the module and circuitry is to monitor the voltage at the “Cam Signal Out” circuit (ckt 630). Disconnect the cam sensor connector, and with a test light connected to ground, touch the test light to terminal A (ckt 633). The voltage at ckt 630 should drop to near zero every time the test light is touched to the cam sensor terminal connector “A”, if it does, the module and circuitry to the module is good. -- This should keep you busy for awhile :), let us know if you need more help or if you fix it, what the fix was. ---- Harvey.
