Hey Jamie, When I perform a diagnostics that is not code related I make sure that I finish my complete diagnostic sequence even though I might have found a proble half way thru. I try to prove out the circuit to make sure that this would be the only fault. This is not possible all the time, but most times it is. I do not believe in charging Diagnostics by time. Diagnostics should be menu driven..in other words, what equipment will be used and expertise needed? I believe that customers should be educated to understand the difference of a modern day tuneup to replacing plugs, filter ect. We should think of this part of our trade like the medical industry. First is diagnostics then maybe depending on the difficulty of the problem..exploritory surgery...Once the problem is found we perform the surgery or repairs. The repair is the only part that should be time driven as money per hour. All othe types of diagnostics should be menu driven. Which then leaves me with another question to ask. If we would consider ourselves the specialistis in this field, what is our worth? How is this weighed? And how do we educate the customer or shops with this paridigm.
