Dave, I must admit I don't print out diagnostic information as much as I probably should, but I do feel it has some value to the customer, and to us as well, especially when there are multiple failures and only one problem has been repaired, it offers some proof of repair. In terms of how long initial diagnostics should take, I think that depends on the vehicle and the problem at hand, for example, checking fuel pressure on most GM products is comical, however other vehicles could take .5 just to get the gauge hooked up. I guess one could come up with an average time spent on initial diagnostic routines and charge all customers equally, but I think that would be unfair to the customers who have cars that are easier to work on. I agree with what you said at the ARA convention about the .5 to determine the circuit at fault in a no start and I think other items like this could have a set price. I don't run my own shop yet so I don't set the prices where I am, but if I did, I think the best way to go about it would be to allow a certain amount of diagnostic time to do some initial checks, say 1 hour or maybe even 2, to allow us to get to a point of having some direction (its better to overshoot a little on the time than under shoot). After finding the system at fault, I think it is a lot easier to sell more time to a customer to pinpoint it from that point. As to how much it is worth, well, I think that it depends on the technician working on the vehicle. Unfortunately, there are few highly skilled technicians out there and therefore they should come at a price. If you went to a top surgeon in the medical field, it may cost 10 times more than a surgeon not as highly skilled, but you know you have the best chance of your problem being resolved in the least amount of time. How much to charge? I don't know, what do you think? What's your opinion of how much time to spend etc?
