I think for me, the best solution of how far to go is to stay in communication with the customer and let them decide how much time you should spend on the problem. I usually mention that the one problem we are fixing now will fix only that problem and then the vehicle will have to be test driven again after the repair to ensure no other problems are presesnt. If there is no explanation and another prolem arises shortly after the repair, the customer will feel it must have been something we did to their car. I think this is also where printing out before and after waveforms or readings etc can be very helpful.
